This case study in contemporary literary theory is a writing project which consists of seven academic essays on J. M. Coetzee's 1980 novel Waiting for the Barbarians, each from a different theoretical approach in the area of literary criticism, and seven sets of headnotes to explain the theories briefly and to coach readers to attempt such writing of their own.
