Abstract

Background: Despite the severity of the components of the female athlete triad, many coaches are unaware of the syndrome and its health implications. Because of their influence on the lives of their athletes, it is vital that coaches are aware and have knowledge of the female athlete triad so that they can help lead to the identification and prevention of the female athlete triad. This lack of knowledge and awareness may be influenced by the preparticipation evaluation (PPE) form, which has been identified as the primary method of identifying and screening athletes for the female athlete triad. The Female Athlete Triad Coalition has composed eleven questions for inclusion on PPE forms in order to properly screen for the syndrome. By comparing a school’s current PPE forms with these recommendations, it can be made evident whether athletes are being properly screened.

Methods: A questionnaire developed by Mukerjee (2016) was administered to 56 collegiate coaches from 19 universities to measure knowledge and awareness of the female athlete triad. PPE forms from the universities were analyzed to determine the number of recommended questions present on the forms. A hierarchal linear model will be used to analyze the correlation present between the items.
