Abstract

Two Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) senior engineering students competed in the 7thAnnual Ethics in Engineering Case Competition at the Lockheed Martin Center for Leadership Excellence (CLE) in Bethesda, Maryland February 26-28, 2024. Over 70 colleges and universities from around the world competed. In this competition, academic institutions, each represented by a two-student undergraduate team and accompanying faculty mentor, present their solutions to a fictional case involving ethical, business, and engineering dilemmas. This year’s problem involves artificial intelligence and detection of asteroids. The annual event challenges students to think about the importance of ethics in the workplace and the various dilemmas that can arise, especially in the fast-paced world of technology.

The ethics case presents a dilemma that requires two stakeholder groups to resolve. Two schools compete head-to-head, each representing one of the stakeholder groups. The goal for the successful team is to take the lead in coming up with a win-win solution. Each team has 5 minutes to present their assigned company’s recommendations to the other team and to the judges. The two teams then engage in a 15-minute discussion to work toward a common approach. After the discussion, there is a 5-minute question and answer period during which judges may ask teams to explain, clarify, or defend specific aspects of their arguments.

This ONU Scholars Week presentation will discuss how the Lockheed Martin Ethics Engineering Case Study has been used to measure achievement of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) ethics outcome at ONU. The students attending the national competition will share their experience and what they learned from it.
