Abstract

"Electric bikes provide a great way to commute and get around without a car. E-bikes have a reliability issue when their battery supply runs out. An E-bike with a better use of the stored energy inside the battery and more efficient bike design would lead to longer battery life while riding the bike. The bike desired by the company sponsor Matt Blessing is to be an electric bike that can be powered by an electric motor and by pedals. The bike will need to meet basic requirements for a bike and also reach a minimum speed of 20 mph. A number of options for E-bike kits were selected as a base for a working electric bike. The E-bike kit selected by the company sponsor and project team is the Phoenix 2 E-bike kit. This selection meets all the needed requirements inside the sponsor’s budget. Background research and team brainstorming provided a number of ways to improve the bike’s efficiency while riding. The design selected to be implemented is a combination of cooling the motor by Ferro fluid, reprogramming the controller, and weight reduction. The results of the added improvements should increase the bike’s efficiency with the initial battery charge.
