Integrating Spirituality Content into BSW Curriculum: How (and Why) We Must Pursue It

Abstract

This presentation will frame the topic (integration of spirituality content in Bachelor of Social Work curriculum) within the historical relationship between spirituality, social work, and social work education. Arguments for and against spirituality integration will be discussed. The degree of current spirituality integration in Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs across the US will be presented.The two main models of integration -- infusion into core courses and a stand-alone elective course -- will be discussed, along with their strengths and weaknesses. Existing empirical research on the impact of spiritual integration will be reviewed, including social work student responses and potential benefits.
