Technology Engagement and Disengagement among a Select Group of College Students, Professors and Professionals

Don Daake, Olivet Nazarene University

Abstract

This 2019 empirical study looks at technology from a broad based perspective including social media, streaming services, smart phones, search engines, television radio, and others. It reports on levels of use and the level of change from the previous year. Not surprising, is that while some technologies continue to grow others are in decline. It also examines attitudes toward technological trends via the use of Likert-type scales. The sample size is n=123. Most of the students are from ONU, professors and other professionals are from a nationwide convenience sample. Various statistical tests (correlation matrix, t-tests, various ANOVA-family tests) comparing groups are reported. Finally, the presentation of possible implications for business and education are explicated. Given the nature of this study, it should be considered an exploratory study. Several exploratory hypotheses are also advanced that should be tested in the next round of research.
