Abstract

Illinois adopted the Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards in March 2021, for implementation in teacher preparation programs. Cultural responsiveness improves student outcomes across a range of indicators from math and reading scores to attendance, to postsecondary enrollment. The standards encourage self-reflection, knowledge of student's communities, connection to culturally relevant curriculum, and encouragement of student leadership. These components of the culturally responsive teaching framework are in direct alignment with how Jesus connected to the communities He served. This presentation will highlight how Christian educators can effectively engage in culturally responsive teaching in an increasingly diverse education system by modeling themselves after the Master Teacher.
